See, kissing isn't something that happens often.
There are 7 billion people on this planet. Out of that number, only about 4 will kiss you; your parents, spouse and children (if you have them).
When anyone who isn't your spouse/partner kisses you, it can only be a quick peck for a few seconds. Go anywhere beyond that, and society will call it "sexual."
But a hug can be given to anybody. It can last for as long as you want it to, and it feels much more meaningful than kissing.
If you had a child, and he/she started crying and you wanted to console him, a kiss would be nice. But a hug would be much more warm and comforting, and it would allow him/her to really feel like they can depend on you, even if that means you end up getting their snot and tears on your jacket.
Hugging is better in my opinion...
